I need to start getting my lungs built up again, and get into the mode.

How deep have you found them Eric?

Out of shape - I'm soooo there...   :'(

I've never been a super deep diver - 30' makes me feel like I have no time.  I've found scallops in 10-15' at Trinidad, and we got some huge ones off pinnacles along the coast north of the Cove about 20 years ago - diving maybe 20-25'.

BigJim,

What size gun are you using in the low vis conditions?  I have a JBL Magnum and an Omer 82cm that I am happy with (mainly the Omer).  I have a pole spear that work pretty good for the low visibility days, but have considered getting a shorty gun for close shooting.  It looked like you had a little Biller or Riffe in your video?

I am really wanting to try for scallops!  Not sure if there are any pinnacles with them at the cove.  I may have to dive Trinidad for them.

Matt

I've gotten scallops near the Cove...  We'll get you dialed, Matt.   :)

Things are looking good - nice work, Aaron!

One thing I'm noticing is that entering a thread takes some time - the top part of the thread pops up, but the replies don't fill in for 10-15 seconds.  Also, as I type, it's like I'm on qualudes!  I type, and the letters don't appear for a sec, so I get ahead of myself and make mistakes that I can't see i nreal time - like that one.  I'm ignorant about what could cause this.

thx,   :)

I've got a bunch of pics I want to put up, but it says the limit is 192 KB - that seems low.  The photos I use have been taken down to 600x800 - that's the standard.  I'll send a PM to Aaron about it.

Fishing report title:  Sometimes there's a location, sometimes there's not - that's fine, but I think it should always have a date.   :)

I jammed over to the Cape around 2:30, got on the beach at 3:20, and was wetting a line right before 4PM.  The water had lots of brown to it due to the Mattole's heavy outflow a few miles south, but the quality was not bad overall.  With a 16' swell just destroying everything from the outer reef out about a quarter mile (!), I had only a few options for fishable water during the minus tide.  Got a few taps and broke off one sand bag and rockcod rig in the kelp, but I didn't mind at all because the really nice part of the afternoon was the very light wind and ample sunshine.  Even had my shirt off!  OMG, I needed the 3 miles on the beach, and the hour of getting a few bites was just fine too.   :)

Now for a test of how well the attachment features work.   ;D

I'm all over it, Jim - we're slaves to the conditions there though.  If it's not "nice" then our choices will be limited.  You've progressed so well in your diving, and it may be time for the challenges of extremely low viz!   ;D  JK (kinda) - I hope we get nice clear water, but be ready for something between zero and 10' of viz.   :)

Having a diving section is a good idea - lots of us kayakfisher types also dive.

It would be cool to call it something else, but we need a spot where people can post up looking for a partner for an upcoming outing.

Join a couple hundred of us at Shelter Cove for the entire weekend of the rockfish and lingcod opener!

Friday, May 13th - @ 5PM - safety seminar/meet and greet/BBQ @ the boat ramp - we'll review the lay of the reef, where not to paddle, the importance of dressing for immersion and self-rescue, hand out tournament packets, shirts, and hoodies, cook up some chicken and maybe even drain a few brews.  Many will also be either diving, shore fishing, or salmon trolling during the day.

Saturday, May 14th - family day/diving/salmon trolling/golf/general madness with the group - @ 5PM we'll have the 1st of two potlucks at The Tides Inn - the challenge will be to get to bed early in preparation for the next morning's tournament!

Sunday, May 15th - dawn to 1PM is fishing time, and check-in of your fish for tournament points runs from 11AM to 2PM at a tent at the ramp.  Angler of the Day (AOTD) format - points per inch for largest of these 8 species:  lingcod, halibut, salmon (all 5 points/inch), rockfish, cabezon (7 points/inch), perch (12 points/inch), flounder/dabs (8 points/inch), and greenling (11 points/inch).  A "one inch" bonus is allowed for a caught, photo'd and released fish, granted the photo clearly shows your fish on a measuring device such as a Hawg Trough.  The AOTD will win some nice trophies plus a new Trident 13 Angler by Ocean Kayak.  We have numerous other nice prizes and some raffle bling too.  At 4PM we'll start the Leftovers potluck and awards ceremony, and some participants have to leave that evening.

Monday, May 16th - more diving, fishing, trolling, beach-combing, potlucking...etc.  Stay as long as you can and enjoy what the Cove has to offer!

See attached docs for more details - beware of stray details indicating a Saturday tournament, as DFG tripped me up on the opener date...  Part of the mystique of the tournament lies in the murky details!   ;)

I like that idea.

Be sure to add an events section and I'll get the GS5 info on there.
