Fishing - General / Kayaking out of Humboldt Bay - 6/12 and 6/13/2011
« on: June 15, 2011, 12:03:03 am »
Saturday I heard on Humboldt Tuna Club of fish being caught in shallower water off Humboldt Bay, and I saw that Sunday was to be flat and calm again, but the family plan was to go to the river, and we have to get an early start for that...  I woke at 6 and checked the forecast and Eel River buoy - flat, calm...  Over the next 45 minutes I geared up and got myself out to the South Jetty parking lot with my salmon gear, immersion gear, and the old Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT - it was light enough to launch off the rocks.  I found a good spot to hop down the boulders with the gear, got to work and was paddling in 15 minutes.  I worked hard at 7:45AM to paddle out against the last of the incoming tide which was to be high at 10:08 - a tricky spot, as I had to be leaving by slack tide around 10AM in order to get home for the family day.  For 20-30 minutes or so I kept a strong pace as I paddled out of the Humboldt Bay Jaws against the tide - I saw dolphins along the way and birds up in the distance signifying bait right at the bay opening.  Once I got there and cleared the bar I baited up and trolled out toward the bell buoy - it's red here versus the green bell buoy at Shelter Cove.  I had about 45 minutes to troll, and I could see so many powerboats in the distance and hear them on the radio as they felt out the bite for the morning.  The word was lots of silvers and shaker kings.  I would be happy with a bite!  I got a few good tacks in with a nice chovie behind a dodger giving me a chance at a king, but it wasn't to be on this mission.  I wrapped my opportunity up and drifted a nice herring along the jetty on my way back to the truck.  Pulled the yak and gear off the water and jammed home to pull off a successful river day with the family.  Good Times, but I wish I'd have had more time to paddle out further on such a calm day.  Later that day I monitored the buoy reports and it was one of those days where the wind never came up past 5 knots or so all the way through the evening.

Monday looked like it would produce more calmness, as the 9AM forecast said "variable winds to 5 knots".  So I bailed work early, hooked up with Matanaska, and we were to launch at King Salmon at 2:30 to drift out along the jetties for the 4:08 low tide - that would allow for an offshore trolling journey with the return being any time as the tide would be coming in from 4:08 until an hour after dark.  Well, that variable winds forecast was BS, because we arrived at the launch at 1:45 to see whitecaps at the bar - from 2 MILES away!  We decided to launch anyway as we both had a pass and we figured to be able to fish along the jetties anyway.  We ended up paddling over 5 miles on the GPS and it was basically wind-torture.  We had choves and herring nicely presented along a quarter mile of the south jetty for a while for no bites before retreating across to behind the inner corner of the north jetty for a bit where we drifted more beautiful bait along 60-15' bottom all the way back to launch.  For NO bites all afternoon long!  We were glad to get out for the paddle though, and we'll be ready to get out again soon.   :)

I'll try to post some pics..

Fishing - General / Lost Coast Kayak Angling Videos - June 2011
« on: June 13, 2011, 12:45:58 am »
I've slowed down on what has become a very regular record of video production over the past 3.5 years.  Part of the reason is some recent malfunctioning of Windows Movie Maker...  I've also been lacking super special footage, but I did manage to get some nice scenes with the old standby:  rockfish and lingcod!  W/ an exciting launch thrown in.   ;D

Title inspired by this site.   :)  Enjoy!

Fishing - Report / Shelter Cove - 4/20/11
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:37:18 pm »
Hit the Cove again today with Domenic and Dan the Boogieman.  None of us hooked up, but we had some strikes, and not many fish were caught by the 22 powerboats either.  Great time on the water - at least 10 miles trolling again in a strong current.  We went about 3/4 mile south of the Whistle, then back inside, then back out 1/2 to 3/4 north of the Whistle - scratch bite came alive for a few powerboats on the radio at noon, but it didn't last long.  We'll get 'em soon.   :)

I tried to attach ONE shrunken photo, but it's too much for the capabilities of this forum.  I'll post elsewhere.

Fishing - Report / Shelter Cove - 4/10/11
« on: April 12, 2011, 12:25:08 am »
From last night:  Brutal day at the Cove.  Saw lots of fish caught - including a 24 pound 40 incher!  Mostly smaller fish to 15 pounds, but heard of at least one other twenty and several high teens.  I was only able to manage a few strikes and one pretty good one broken off.  Bummers - especially for 8 straight hours of trolling!!  Ouch - I'm torched right now.  Not sunburnt, just so spent - it was an epic marathon of a workout.  I wish I'd have used the GPS to track mileage today - I'd say we did at least 12.  Dan the Boogieman joined us and shared the misery of no fish with me, but Domenic got one around 10 pounds, so we were stoked as a group anyway.  The water wasn't bad, and surprisingly, either was the wind.  We got "boarded" by DFG around 1PM - they actually boarded all the sport boats in the area (15 or so) and came to each of us on kayaks for license and hook check - that was a bit awkward and overkillish for the open water, IMO.  I think the average was well over a fish per rod today, so we didn't fare that well on the yaks, and I'm not sure why.  The fish weren't that deep.  I'm thinking the choppy water slowed us down, and past success trolling may have been on smoother days.  Oh well, gotta take it in stride, be happy for the day and the experience, and look forward to the future.  Good company and a nice ocean were definitely a pleasure.  Thank you to Domenic and Dan for the time on the water together.   :)

I've got some pics, but I'll wait to post them when that function works better.

You've got to shrink a photo or screenshot down to a very small size to get it up here, and then it's only one per post.  I know that'll discourage lots of potential contributors.

Hookups / Could it be?! A real fishing opportunity?!!!
« on: April 06, 2011, 12:34:50 pm »
This Saturday my son has his baseball jamboree - I'm looking forward to it, and it'll be over by early afternoon.  If the forecast holds for Cape Mendo to Pt. Arena (.SAT...NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT...BECOMING SW 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. NW SWELL 7 FT.), I plan to get down to the Cove by mid afternoon and troll for salmon until dark.  The fish being caught so far seem to be taking plastic (Apex), and that's a good early season option since chovies/herring will attract rockfish and lingcod which are off limits right now.  I think my regular partner is heading out of town, so if anyone's interested in sharing gas money and some time on the water speak up or be ready to potentially read and weep!   ;D

Fishing - Locations / Kings @ Shelter Cove - 4/4
« on: April 05, 2011, 05:55:10 pm »
I've been watching closely for reports out of the Cove.  9 boats out yesterday afternoon - pretty much the only window of decent waves and weather so far - most boats had fish around the Whistle and not too far down - to 18 pounds!  I'll be on this as soon as family and weather details allow.

Hookups / Must Have Water Soon - Target: 3/27/11
« on: March 26, 2011, 08:30:45 pm »
I'm wasting away from work, weather, and waiting for salmon season and GS.  Very busy week coming up, and I've got to get out tomorrow to just sit on my boat and enjoy the fresh air and the water beneath me.  The weather sounds pretty crappy:  .SUNDAY...BREEZY. RAIN DEVELOPING. HIGHS 48 TO 55. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH. , but the temps don't sound too bad anyway.  I'm thinking Freshwater Lagoon.  Any takers?

Hookups / Salmon Trolling
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:01:24 am »
We should get official word soon, and it looks like we'll be able to start fishing on Saturday, April 2nd at Shelter Cove.  Right when the ocean's flat and my family obligations allow, I'll be on the road to the Cove and out by the Bell, at least, dragging chovie around at 20-30 pulls.  I CANNOT WAIT!   ;D
